This stainless-steel head gasket keychain celebrates the BMW S54B32, BMW M’s naturally aspirated 3.2-litre inline-six. Best known as the engine of the E46 M3, it combines individual throttle bodies, double VANOS and an 8,000 rpm maximum engine speed.

Engine Identity

  • Manufacturer: BMW M GmbH.

  • Engine code: S54B32, commonly shortened to S54.

  • Configuration: Longitudinal, naturally aspirated inline-six petrol engine.

  • Cylinder count: Six.

  • Displacement: 3,246 cc / 3.2 litres.

  • Production period: 2001–2008 in BMW M road-car applications; published listings sometimes cite 2000–2011 for broader engine production and service context.

  • Valvetrain: DOHC, four valves per cylinder, 24 valves total, with double VANOS continuously variable cam timing.

  • Fuel system: Electronic fuel injection with six individual electronically controlled throttle bodies.

BMW’s S54 training material describes the S54B32 as a 3,246 cc, naturally aspirated, four-valve-per-cylinder inline-six, using double VANOS and a six-speed manual transmission in the E46 M3.

Vehicle Compatibility Matrix

Engine application Vehicle Chassis Production years Factory output
S54B32 BMW M3 Coupé and Convertible E46 2001–2006 343 PS / 252 kW and 365 Nm in European specification; 333 hp and 355 Nm in North American specification.
S54B32 BMW Z3 M Roadster E36/7 2001–2002 325 PS / 239 kW and 354 Nm in European specification; 315 hp / 340 Nm in North American specification.
S54B32 BMW Z3 M Coupé E36/8 2001–2002 325 PS / 239 kW and 354 Nm in European specification; 315 hp / 340 Nm in North American specification.
S54B32 BMW Z4 M Roadster E85 2006–2008 343 PS / 252 kW and 365 Nm in European specification.
S54B32 BMW Z4 M Coupé E86 2006–2008 343 PS / 252 kW and 365 Nm in European specification.
S54B32HP BMW M3 CSL E46 2003–2004 360 PS / 265 kW and 370 Nm; a higher-output European-market variant.

The S54B32 was used in the E46 M3, Z3 M Roadster/Coupé and Z4 M Roadster/Coupé. The S54B32HP in the E46 M3 CSL is a higher-output derivative, so its engine calibration and related parts should not be assumed identical to the standard S54B32.

Why This Engine Matters

The S54B32 made more than 100 horsepower per litre without turbocharging or supercharging, producing its E46 M3 peak power at 7,900 rpm. Its six individual throttle bodies, high 11.5:1 compression ratio and double VANOS system gave the engine an unusually sharp response and a distinctive high-rpm character.

The engine also reflects BMW M’s focus on track-capable lubrication: its two-stage oil pump uses separate supply and scavenge sections to move oil from the front of the sump to the main rear sump during demanding braking and cornering. This engineering, together with the forged crankshaft and forged connecting rods, helped make the S54 one of BMW’s defining naturally aspirated straight-sixes.
