The EA824 4.0 TFSI became one of Audi’s defining high-performance V8 engines of the 2010s.

Displacing 3,993 cc, the 90-degree V8 uses an 84.5 mm bore and 89 mm stroke, aluminium construction, four valves per cylinder, direct fuel injection and twin turbochargers mounted inside the cylinder-bank vee.

This unusual “hot-V” layout shortens the exhaust path between the cylinder heads and turbochargers, improving response while allowing the 4.0 TFSI to fit into applications ranging from the S6 and S7 to the RS6, RS7 and S8. Audi’s technical training material specifically identifies the turbochargers and charge-air cooling system inside the vee as defining features of the engine.

Factory outputs ranged from around 420 PS in the S6/S7 to 605 PS in the RS6 Performance, RS7 Performance and S8 Plus, while retaining the same underlying 4.0 TFSI architecture.

The same engine family was also adapted for the Bentley Continental GT, Continental GTC and Flying Spur V8, creating an unusually broad enthusiast application for one physical head-gasket design.
